A letter, 1813 Dec. 11, from H. Clay, to D[ear] Sir, wherein Clay is forwarding a letter from Mr. Duval, recommending a substitute for Mr. Strother. Clay writes that Mr. Clarke is expected, and that he wishes to consult with him about a successor for Mr. Hanigan. Clay proposes a Mr. Hubbard Taylor if the selection "cannot wait." A letter, 1845 Aug. 26, from H. Clay, to Mrs. Foster, apologizing for not seeing her "at the moment of [her] departure from this place yesterday." Clay further thanks Mrs. Foster for books that she sent him.

Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the Senate and House. He was the seventh House speaker and the ninth secretary of state. He received electoral votes for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 presidential elections.
